Colin, someone, anyone...help Stef
She means well but needs a day with Colin more than anyone I've ever come across.

Re: Colin, someone, anyone...help Stef
Anyone who races a vintage Volkswagen in the Lemons race deserves a long, difficult, and financially upsetting journey. Why would it be ok to disrespect the factory engineering like that?

Re: Colin, someone, anyone...help Stef
I think her heart's in the right place. There wouldn't be anything wrong with "racing" a well-running ACVW in Lemons, would there?

Re: Colin, someone, anyone...help Stef
Hahah, now that is funny. Racing a aircooled without the cooling stuff... no wonder it got too hot and burned the pistons.

Re: Colin, someone, anyone...help Stef
Myself, I'm inclined to forgive even such an egregious oversight. No less a ACVW-knowledgeable figure as hambone once asked here whether it was or wasn't right to see all that pavement beneath a Type 3 engine when he looked down on it, like, was it missing something. Odds approach 100% that anyone helping Stef with her 411 has never seen a living specimen before in their life. I've been in the "scene" (that is, keeping my eyes open and scouring junkyards) for over 25 years now, and I can count on one hand all the 411s I've seen. Did I know fer sure whether their engines were shrouded up in cooling tin, like a Type 3, or upper/lower split like everything else (I think) is? No.
And again, racing in LeMons isn't racing in any meaningful sense of the word--it's driving whatever you have as fast as you can. Any owner's manual will tell you that driving flat-out in a well-maintained ACVW is perfectly fine, top speed being cruising speed and all. I've implored her to come here to gain knowledge and get that 411 up to "racing"--that is, normal, stock--specs.

Re: Colin, someone, anyone...help Stef
Like the Type 3, it doesn't need the cooling stuff. It needs only an intact boot between the body and the cooling fan. I think she was over-advanced.

You and I are going to. And you will discover that the ghost of Porsche comes through. These cars love a good run.

Re: Colin, someone, anyone...help Stef
Indeed. I've implored her by pm and in the comments. I also got a note a while back that she 'follows' me.

Re: Colin, someone, anyone...help Stef
Find a sponsorship or a car and I'm in!
My current ACVW driving record is 22 hours in one sitting. Average speed over 956 miles appears to be 43.5 mph.
Though mom's bug is notoriously fun to counter-steer on Mulholland Ave.
