Type IV Engine Reminder of the day

When remantling the engine, install the mustache bar BEFORE installing the heat exchangers.

That is all.

I had just had the exchangers off, so pulling one to get the bar in was easy enough. Just felt stupid for a bit and grumbled.

Not running yet. I was sitting in the barn working on it, thinking "Man! It's getting pretty windy out here." Figured I would keep plugging away until the rain started. Then my wife turn up fraught with concern. "It's supposed to be 70 mph winds in a few minutes! The weather radar map shows it coming right for us!"

I usually don't pay attention to much of that, but I was at a good place for a break so I buttoned up and went in. The barn is about 400 feet from the house. By the time I got into the house, the trees were blowing sideways. The rain was hard, and about 10 minutes later power went out. That pretty much shot the rest of my evening. On the bright side, power came back on at about midnight.

The bus needs the muffler and about 5 pieces of tin installed before she is ready to fire up. Hopefully I can do that tonight.

Oh the shame and humiliation. The lamentations of children and puppies fills the air!

Everything is in, but I am not getting the fuel pump to click on. Probably a wiring mistake somewhere. I read the Double Relay article 3 times, but could not sort it out. I'm sure Colin will help me get it straight pretty quickly this morning.

Here's the one that drove me batty. Maybe it's specific to the Vanagon:
  • Install the oil filler pipe before the moustache bar.
  • Install the moustache bar before the fan housing.
  • Install the fan housing before the oil filler pipe.
Spot the logic failure there?

Three common errors re FI that can keep the relay area from working right:

1) forget to attach the plug to the AFM because it hides behind the AFM
2) forget to attach the ground wire in the relay area. It goes behind one of the mounting screws to ground things
3) 1979 FI buses use two different style (non-interchangeable) relays depending on Federal or California.

Turned out that three of the pins in the AFM connector had been pushed out of place. The full litany of issues is explained in nauseating detail in my itinerary post.
