Crankshaft drive gears installation
Has anyone done this themselves? I never have. The cam shaft and distributor gears onto the crankshaft. Pressed on after heating in an oil bath. When you have no press, is it doable?

Put the crank in the freezer (in a plastic bag) for a bit and heat up the gears in oil not so they are red hot. Pull out the crank and secure it so its easy to put the gears on, I like it vertical. Put them on one by one quickly as they will slide on with "slight" effort making sure they on oriented correctly. Do not heat them with torch if you screw them up and use a puller to remove em if you make a mistake. Ever see the picture of the crank that was heated to black and blue with a torch to remove the gears??? Pretty funny and the guy wanted a refund/warranty on the crank.!

It's not a hard job but it does take some attention and a couple of mock trials of movement to make sure you get the gear lined up with the index key on the crank. The key for me was cooling the crank in the freezer first.

To remove them, you use a gear puller that hooks onto the cam gear and pulls off both gears at the same time. This isn't a hard job but a pair of thick leather gloves helps so you don't burn your hands as you install the hot gears. You line them up and slide them on.

Not that easy. The CRANK gear (steel, meshes with camshaft) is too close to the #4 main bearing journal to use any old puller. It also requires a bit more force than your average junky puller could ever withstand . . . if you have the healthy interference required.Bleyseng wrote:To remove them, you use a gear puller that hooks onto the cam gear and pulls off both gears at the same time.
Machine shops have a beveled clam-plate that hugs the perimeter of the crank gear with the recommended load spread, then use a press to push the crankshaft down out of the gears. This operation runs the risk of galling the crankshaft's gear supporting surfaces, so please clean the crank shaft nicely from the gears on out to where they are free.

Sounds like the wise move would be to shop out removal, but do the install oneself. I watched the process this time. No oil bath, just a hot plate and a very thick leather glove with a punch assist.

I have done it at my shop and dropped it off at a shop to have it done. That way was the easiest by far. Using a gear puller grinding the jaws slightly so it fit, I used a propane torch to heat the gear a bit and slowly pull it off keeping a cold wet rag on the crank to keep it cool as possible.
Works ok especially if you don't have time and money.
