Colin stops in Grayslake IL to help me with an oil leak

Post by locoqueso » Fri Aug 24, 2012 5:20 am

Well, he's not here yet. I still have a couple hours to go he arrives. I'm just looking forward to addressing an oil leak that developed after changing the clutch a couple years ago. Replacing the seals last year didn't fix it so we'll see what happens today...

Take some pictures. Don't drop the spring!
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue, I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace. Where never lark, or even eagle flew. And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod, The high untrespassed sanctity of space, Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

What spring? It was a funny and non-specific reference to Mitch and "The Great Spring Adventure".

THAT spring!

What if it IS a gallery plug? Are we looking at a engine drop and split?

We had another full day this year. The engine came out but hopefully for the last time. After some investigation, Colin went to work on the oil leak with some JB Weld to the gallery plugs. He also pulled a rogue risistor off the temp sensor. Hopefully that will be the end of the rough ride. Thanks again for your help Colin. I'll keep you posted on our test drive tomorrow.

I had a great test drive on Sunday. I forgot to connect the double relay to the coil but after a quick call from Colin we were up and running. The bus ran fine for the 40 mile drive. I still have a little oil leak from the bell housing but it's nothing close to the constant drip I had before Colin arrived.

While we were working, Colin found this extra resistor that someone stuck on the temp sensor 2...

Coline said someone added it to compensate for a vacuum leak instead of fixing the problem. I believe this may have been the cause of the bucking and hesitation issue that's been plaguing this old bus. I didn't have a single performance issue while driving last weekend so I'm optimistic the problem has been solved.

Who is Coline, and what does he/she know anyway?

Keep a close eye on that bell housing area. We can now say that one of the gallery plugs was indeed leaking. This is a problem that is not going away. It can be safely addressed at engine overhaul time.
If the copious leak comes back, you must repair. I do not trust tapping and drilling with an assembled engine.

Ha! that looks like a 1973 2.0l temp 2 resistor that was stock to fix a lean idle mix issue until the 74 model came out. Sell it to the 914 guys

Good to know, thanks Bleyseng! I planned to hang it in the bus as a reminder for the next time I want to replace parts to troubleshoot a problem.
