Re: Rust and a Squareback
Pictures? I need pictures of this beast!
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue, I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace. Where never lark, or even eagle flew. And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod, The high untrespassed sanctity of space, Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

Re: Rust and a Squareback
Fate, as it unfolds. I won't drive it thataway. Small doses of ZERO oil pressure are healthy anyway.
I have sanded rust, curst', pickled with pink jelly, and primered about 70% of the car now. Lookin' good, minimal body work will be needed. But oh those missing bits, I shudder at their potential cost. I only hope they come to me thru good chance.
Next I need to get those brakes in order. And buy a battery, damn they're expensive.

There's a global lead shortage right now. China used most of the reserves to make children's toys...hambone wrote:And buy a battery, damn they're expensive.

Re: Rust and a Squareback
Schwab has the best deal on batteries right now, $70 ouch.
New battery, new injector seals, Hardware from the Blessed Halls of Hal, junkyard fuses from a Mercedes. Injectors are soaking in Palmolive, as I write these very words. Time to get out there and put on some more primer. I will be very glad when I am done with primer. Tears will fall like gentle rain.

Re: Rust and a Squareback
I see that the hood release cable has been disconnected. Fun. Hey, what happens if the cable breaks? How the heck do you get the hood open? Beetle, you have to cut the handle.

Re: Rust and a Squareback
After a long and crazy day of work, and with Gypsie help we got 4 working injectors. Only 2 and 3 were firing previously, amazing that the engine would even run on 2 cylinders.
Of the 4 that Hal gave me, there were only 2 good ones. The other 2 leak from the body.
New injector seals and all buttoned up (tight spot...). Then she fired right up and ran on all 4 for the first time in many years. There is a weird lope at idle, but I have not inspected vacuum lines or attempted any tuning yet besides a quick timing, so I'm sure it can be figured out. Also sounds like a weird exhaust leak from somewhere. But all and all a very good day and it's nice that it runs. Very strong pulses from the tailpipe and the engine sounds pretty smooth.
Most of the car is now in primer, still have the back pass rear to sand and paint. I will be overjoyed to stop this sanding!
Off to take a look at the front brakes. Wish me luck.

Can I drive it when I get back out there?hambone wrote:After a long and crazy day Wish me luck.
Lopy idle is usually either rich or vacuum leak, which makes it rich as I already told you.

Re: Rust and a Squareback
You may be the first, without lights or windows of course. Hope to paint it this month.
All these assemblies needing attention all at once is daunting, especially on an extreme-budget.
When will you be here?

Re: Rust and a Squareback
New calipers and flex hoses installed, brakes bled and wheels back on. So far they seem to work.
I am ready for the First Run Under Power! Hasn't done that since '97. Anyone have time this week? This is not something I want to do alone. A big moment.

Re: Rust and a Squareback
Today was a huge milestone, the last of the body rust is gone, and the whole car is in primer.
Hal showed up outa the blue with lenses and housings, thanks again!
Unfortunately the injectors are leaking again. Tried to start it, fired up, but then ran horribly. Shut it off to find wet gassy injectors. It looks like they will need to be replaced. Major bummer but what can I do?
