Pigalle Squareback?

Post by fancy pants » Fri Jul 10, 2009 1:50 pm

I have been looking to buy a squareback and this one caught my eye.

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/ ... ?id=812413

It is supposedly a Pigalle, but the photos show a black carpet. How would I go about researching whether this is a true Pigalle?

Also, how difficult a repair would the rust on the rocker panel be?

The ad says 'documented'. I would inquire of this purported documentation.

Owner says he acquired a VW "birth certificate" with the Pigalle option listed. I am skeptical due to the black carpeting. Of course, the original carpeting could have been beaten up and someone may have replaced with black, however, the seats look to be pristene - leading me to believe that the carpet shouldn't have been battered enough to need replacement.

Maybe I am just being paranoid :drunken:

The dash is heavily cracked so I wonder if the seat covers are original. Arizona is cruel to vinyl.

You need to ask your question in the Type 3 forum on The Samba. There are volks there that KNOW Type IIIs and can help out. I would ask for a clear PHOTOGRAPH of the VIN on the dash and a scan of the birth certificate, minimum.

Looks to be the one! Thanks for the digging this up. I have emailed a few questions to the seller, but haven;t heard back yet. That dash seems to be in pretty sad shape. Hmmmm....

In 1966 an option was offered on the T3 line for a "Pigalle" red interior on white or black vehicles. I saw one a few years back and fell in love...

The seat covers & panels would be easy enough to replace if someone were trying to "fake" a Pig. The cracked dash pad and scratches on the steering column .. not so easy to fake.

If it's not a genuine Pigalle car, someone went to a *lot* of effort to fake it.

I guess my biggest concern would be finding a replacement dash...

Hiya pants,

So.....I went back through the link that mida provided. Assuming that this is the same car, I'm wondering why the guy is selling it. He's only had it for it for about 8 months. Everything in that thread sounds like he's treating it as a keeper.

So why is he now selling it? Just on the face of it, that raises some questions.
I have cancer.

It does not have me.

Yeah - another red flag is that he answered my first round of questions very quickly. I then asked him how long he had it, what kind of mechanical condition it was in and for some additional pix of the dash and he has been pretty slow to get back to me.

Strange...
