I'm planning to go see it this Friday or Saturday. I asked some questions and they were a little vague about rust, so I'm not getting my hopes up until I get a good look at the bottom and the front wheel wells (which I hear are critical on these super beetles). I have those cup holders in my 77 and hate em. They block the gauges!! I will be installing something else and giving those away.

I suppose if you've dropped 4k+ on a Raby Special you might want gauges. I've read where he gets really pissed when folks run around with one of his engines and don't monitor it with gauges.chitwnvw wrote:I'll take a cup holder over gauges any day.

I was thinking of going Raby next build and let him take care of all the balancing, tolerances, etc. But if it is just going to be something I worry about and obsess over, I might have to rethink. I had become a fan of checking the oil level, looking in the valve covers now and again, and keeping my ears open to what the engine tells me.dtrumbo wrote:Not if you've dropped 4k+ on a Raby Special. If I dropped that much on an engine, I would want to know what was going on with it. But as blyseng said, that was part of the problem.
I love my couple holders. But I don't have any gauges to block.

The Raby kit has as much new parts as you can source for it...the rest are as new.....
The gauges are for other drivers more than me as I listen to the engine and feel it and watch the tach. When others drive I just say not to let the CHT hit over 400F, oil temps over 240F and let to oil pressure below 20 psi..The tach has a redline at 5000...
Then I go to sleep or sit in the back while they drive and enjoy the view out the windows... Monique likes em as then she knows how much she can push it as she does like to go 75mph in the Westy.. She says "It drives nice at that speed"..and I say we get better gas milege if you stay at 70!

Nowdays I am driving the Ghia with no gas gauge, tach, oil lite or oil pressure or CHT gauge AND I am driving it like I stole it.. It does have new 10/40w Brad Penn oil in it...its fun but its no 914.
