Man, I would love to do some CSI Air-Cooled on some of these tragic fails.
The fail is improper valve seat installation without the right interference fit into the head. This local shop is known for its failures but these heads were done in 1998 and made it 20,000 miles

It is a challenge to communicate to our machinists all the details we now know must be done correctly. Every problem I have had to face comes back to that moment where my heart sank as they said, "naw, it'll be fine, I've been working on these things for years."

I used the 96mm Biral cylinders this time. A lot bigger it turns out so the tin barely fits with some effort.
Any cooling concerns as a result?

No, and the aluminum fins will cool the cylinders better. It wasn't a concern with steel cylinders but it's a experiment.

More progress as the engine/tranny are back in!

All those little pieces like the shiter coupling etc have been installed. Now is installing the Djet Fuel Injection and other topside stuff to finish it off. I had a extra set of powdercoated tin I installed so now its making sure all parts are clean and refreshed before installing.

I have many questions, because I never get to delve into 914 stuff as much as I’d like...

Are the coil-over shocks factory?
Does the mustache bar have rubber mounts on the T4 case and/or the outer mount points?
Does it share the early bus or late bus starter?
Is that the five speed or four speed?

Yes, the rear shocks were coilovers from the factory, no T bars.
The engine bar has rubber mounts at the engine and tranny but solid mount at the chassis.
914's have their own starter due to the use of a 5 speed 901 tranny and different clutch/flywheel setup. The shift pattern is the early dogleg 1st 901 pattern shared with the 911/912. Worn out first gears from grinding is really common. There aren't that many parts that are shared with buses other than the basic T4 longblock as then they installed all the 914 tin on it.

Doing all the final hook ups, cleaning cleaning parts to re-install plus finding them again. Tackled the headlight bucket cleaning as that has to be done every year as crap falls in the bottom rusting out the buckets if you don't. Also pulled the front hood gasket to clean underneath as that rusts out too.
It takes forever to install everything in the engine compartment as it's so hard to get to as it's mid-engine!

Finally started it up and as I had a delay because the fuel pump relay wasn't working. After pre-oiling the engine by cranking it with the plugs out and fuel pump disabled til I got oil pressure. Hooked it back up and fired right up. Did a warmup and then called it a night. Now to unstick a sticking front brake caliper as everyone is backordered on these 911 77-83 "A" calipers, sheesh as I want to drive it now/do some tuning on it.

Oh, you should have seen what I did to free my Squareback's calipers, so very very ugly, but it worked . . . :flower:

What did Len do to your heads? I have blueprinted heads in Gary, and as this engine breaks in I am pleasantly surprised by the power it has. I'm mulling over the idea of a T4 in the Ghia.

They are new 914 2.0L castings with 44x38 valves, some porting, combustion chambers are heat coated. I already have a Raby 9550 cam so the bigger valves let the engine rev with power upto 6000rpms..and pull with lots of torque. I used the AA 96mm Biral cylinders just for fun and more heat control.

If you do a type 4 in your Ghia go with Raby's DTM fan shroud and dual carbs.
