Show up in Seattle and you're on. Oh, I see you are in Renton in June so I can come drive down there to meet up.

A) Ronin10 still has to be talking with me.
B) Ronin10 still has to want me out there
C) Ronin10 still needs to have his engine squared away he's a "problem child".
D) I might recommend a breakfast appointment just out of the way of the I-5 beehive on the 30th somewhere convenient to the both of us on my way down to Portland.

You want me put on the sticky tires for some real fun? Where along the I5 as its pretty solid city from Everett to Olympia? I can look for a fun stretch of road with lots of curves along there. Breakfast is fine, do you have a shirt and shoes? (Just kidding :blackeye: )

I see that you did not even bother to ask about pants or shorts, and that is a good thing, because I no longer have either.

( I do not need "sticky tires for some real fun", just a well-maintained safe car. Public roads are entirely too untrustworthy for real fun. I want only to exercise the smooth precision of top-drawer driving at 7/10s)

Well this last summer the 914 was acting up after warming up when driving it. Tried re-tuning it and couldn't figure it out so on the way to put it away for the winter it died with a banging noise. Only a few turns when starting it up but it wasn't a good noise. Finally had time this week to pull the engine and take it apart to find #3 intake valve seat in pieces inside the head. Ordered a set of knockoff Chinese 914 2.0L casting heads from Len at HAM that will get the full treatment including 44x38 valves, coating the combustion chambers and exhaust ports. Len says this really makes a huge difference in these weak heads from dropped valve seat by stopping heat soak and letting the hot exhaust out better.
In the pic note the intake valve is completely inside without any seat! These heads were rebuilt by a local guy in 2000 and only have 15k on them. The valve seats are staked in and obviously don't hold up. So all my efforts to tune the car were in vain as the seat was dropping killing any efforts to get it to run right. Valves adjustments are checked once a year with the oil change so this happened quickly as I don't drive the car that much putting 15k miles on it in 23 years of owning it.

Ouch!

That's amazing what happened there with so few miles on the heads. If I ran a type 4 engine, I'd only run Len's heads on them. His work looks simply amazing.

Make sure you post some pictures of the heads when you get them for us to drool over. :)

After finally getting the right end play, I have the long block all back together. I used the 96mm Biral cylinders this time and they are interesting. Alot bigger it turns out so the tin barely fits with some effort. The custom fit rear main bearing works like a champ to save this case from the junk pile. I sure hate installing the oil tray with those gaskets which seem to fall off everytime I tried to install it.

The fail is improper valve seat installation without the right interference fit into the head. This local shop is known for its failures but these heads were done in 1998 and made it 20,000 miles
