Finally!

Post by Bleyseng » Sat Jan 04, 2014 11:49 pm

After 18 months I pulled the 914 out of storage, fired it up and drove it. Gosh, I had forgotten how fast it is.
I drove it north about an hour to burn off crap in the oil filling it with fresh gas and made the return trip. Its so nice to have great heat when it's cold out plus it is so different to drive than the Ghia or the Westy. Tomorrow I stash the Ghia for the winter and continue to drive the 914 until next Friday. The Westy is doing a bunch of hauling this week before it too goes into storage.

Is there any road salt out there? A Porsche Princess of that epoch can perish at such a possibility.

Not this year as its been fairly warm with temps in the 40'sF so only one day of snow that melted. We used to use sand for decades as salt washes into Lake Washington/Elliott Bay killing the sea life. That changed 4 years ago with the new mayor who now is gone.
Next time you come to Seattle let's meet up so you can drive this beast of a car as it's near the top of air-cooled 4 cylinder development. You have some fun driving not so much fun trying to reach into the engine to work on it. The car does need the pans replaced behind the seats due to a leaking rear window but the rest of the car is rust free.

We drove down to Tacoma in the pouring rain last night in rush hour and I had forgotten how awful that is in a 914. All those damn SUV's and semi trucks throwing up tons of water onto this little low slung sports car so I could barely see. Stop and go and running thru the 5 gears for 45 minutes :pale: plus I was worried about getting rear ended by tailgating morons.

Coming back it was smooth sailing with little traffic trying not to exceed 70mph as tons of State Patrol cars were out.

I would have a difficult time not hating the hell out of monster Lincoln Navigators and Escalades and bellowing dually Dodge pick-ups in the rain.

Are you a dogleg first with that car?

Yes, that's why I rarely let anyone drive it as they tend to slam it into reverse instead of 2nd. It takes a gentle hand to shift the ol' 901 trannys but they do shift smoothly if maintained. It's a close ratio setup too so it's a blast to drive if you know how to shift it.

I tend to pass the SUV's and stay out of blind spots keeping open space around me. Hell, its a bright orange car but still people tend to change lanes right into me :angryfire:

With the Westy everyone just passes me and then slows down :pale:

With the Ghia everyone slides right up next to me and then honks, looks and waves because they like the car so much I guess. :sunny:

Ok then you know the secret to shifting a 901. Do you miss the 1971 .911? Was it a T, L or S?

It was a pussycat 911T with a pile of Zenith carburetors atop that beautiful little 2.2. I was fortunate to have synchronizers that were not beat to death by boy-racers.

Ah, a nice cruising engine with 130hp. I had one laying around, toyed with installing it in my westy then sold it to a friend for a 914/6 conversion. He had a set of rebuilt webers to put on it so when finished it ran great!

The engine is being dropped to install new front and rear seals as I can't stand the oil seeping anymore. The fan had thrown a vane so it was out of balance too so in will go a nos fan. 13 years since I rebuilt the engine with lots of sitting in the winter months so I guess the seals aged.
I'll attack the engine bay cleaning and touching up the paint while the engine is out as it's too dirty for my taste.

Started cleaning the engine bay and just went to town cleaning, sanding, priming and finally repainted the "Hell Hole" side. The battery tray had some rust on it so this restored it to my standards of acceptable.
Transmission is cleaned and ready to go back in so I just have to get more FI rubber reinforced fuel line to replace the older stuff. It's way easier to do Anything on the engine with it out instead of leaning over and trying to reach in as it's damn near impossible.

Here is a pic of the painted area. This is the weak spot of the 914 as they put the battery in that tray with a air intake above it. Rain washed battery acid off the battery down across the structural longitudinal and rust set in pretty fast. Then the "long" collapsed and the car was junked. Thousands of 914 suffered this fate ever to this day. There is also a drain in the engine shelf that originally had a rubber drain tube that clogged with few pieces of dirt so the "Hell Hole" even rusted faster with a puddle of acid water. The reason the battery was located there was to offset the weight of the driver and keep the balance of the car.
I always run a sealed Gel Optima battery so I have no acidrustissues in the Hell Hole. I even run them in my other air-cooled cars to prevent rusting of the battery areas.

To replace the fan I dug out of my stash a NOS early fan complete with the plastic nose. Thought I'd show a pic of it with the numbers on it.
