Rather than using white factory caulk, I decided to go for black butyl. I hope it works in high heat, because it is gross and sticky:

How has the black butyl held up? I didn't realize there was any sort of sealant used for that part of the tin and I currently have all of my tinware/fan housing/etc at the local engine shop getting cleaned up so I can paint where needed and reassemble.

Perfect.
Even with my failing #4 exhaust studs, the heater smells good.
