I hope you are swapping out the reverse gear as it's pretty hammered from shifting into it while moving or mis-adjusted clutch. The slider looks ok other than the busted tooth again from forcing it into gear. These transmission are meant to shift slowly and with a correctly adjusted clutch.

That is a broken reverse gear tooth on the outside of the 1/2 slider. It should be replaced as should the "force-chamfered" reverse idler.

I know tommu does not need a lesson in how to shift a VW transaxle, and could in fact tell you that there are times that a lightening quick gearchange is the more merciful well-synchronized shift than a "shift slowly".

These are the parts that were replaced. Along with the shift ball, roller bearings, seals etc. The transmission is in the car and feeling very nice indeed.

I cannot remember what it felt like on our test drive, did it bring itself to my attention?
You are one step closer to the Bus Nirvana that is a fully capable late model VW bus.
I just drove the BobD two days ago, and it was a reminder that these cars were such beautiful light, precise, drivers when new.

A slightly reluctant change into 3rd, and a reluctant grind into 4th gear were the symptoms. It's a lot quieter too. I couldn't specifically hear transmission noise but it was there.

In truth I could have lived with it for a few years but it wouldn't have been fun.

In all seriousness though.. a trans builder in Burbank?? Is this a shop or a friend? Still need to get my 091 rebuilt and Burbank is WAY closer than all the other shops I have been looking into.

He's a general mechanic and not a transmission specialist. Being is in his 80s and still in demand it's not easy to to get the work scheduled. If you can get a slot then go for it! I only work 10 minutes away by foot, so I could badger him until he had time to work on my bus.

What oil did you use? I have had great results using Swepco 201 transmission oil.. Really smooth shifting.

It was filled by the shop. They dropped and reinstalled the tranny for me. But that is a good tip and a good reminder that I should check the oil level before I drive too far. Just to be sure..

It's fun getting 7.5 pints into it......
