I agree. Back in the 1800's, before photography, there were "itinerant portrait artists" who traveled around to paint families and children, to capture their images for posterity.

Yeahyeahyeah we have photographs (digital whooo) and videos, but PAINTINGS? of your kids and your VWs?

I have seen some of your kids grow before my eyes, right up out of their magical wonder years . . .

I actually love this idea. Drawings, paintings, etc which are done well capture both the character of the time, but also more nuances that a camera is blind to. (Or at least, requires a really GOOD portrait photographer to capture. The photography is in the photographer, not the camera.)
