Grayslake, IL 6/1

Post by locoqueso » Tue Jun 04, 2013 7:50 pm

Colin was in NE Illinois on Saturday for the annual stop in Grayslake. This was the 7th Itinerant Air-Cooled visit for my 78 Campmobile. Although my original To Do List was larger, we focused on replacing most of the exhaust this year. The original exhaust was a rusted, glob of metal parts. Luckily I found a used crossover pipe and right side heat exchanger to go along with some other new replacement pipes that I collected over the last few months.

We had a slow start by trying to remove and preserve as much of the original parts as I could. I should be able to restore the afterburners and crossover pipe for future use. As usual, Colin took on the hardest work. I was sad to learn that some monkey had glued the copper manifold gaskets into place. It took him a while to clean up that mess and get things ready for us to install the new parts. It took us the entire day, but we were eventually able to get the new exhaust hung. I still need to get everything tightened down but the main parts are in place. I don’t think that I’ll have the time or energy to get that done until next weekend. I’m still too sore to get back under there.

Thanks again for all of your help Colin. My bus and I truly appreciate your service!

What makes me sad is that I am a monkey, too. Monkey see . . . monkey hafta do. The flange surfaces were so marred with with what looked like awl puncture wounds and a gully, that my Itinerant Scissorhands effort at milling the surfaces smooth wasn't going to cut it in the time available, so I, too, had to use orange ultra-copper rtv on the poor copper gaskets. With anguish in my voice, I did ask locoqueso if I could leave a note under there for the next guy "I'm SORRY! I HAD to."

I hope to read of your road adventures with pictures too, soon.

The last monkey didn't leave us much of a choice and you got it done. I'll be happy to get this old bus back on the road soon...
