And would you like flies with your steak?

I think $20.00-$40.00 would do it with 45-50 customers if I can find an additional value to offer that makes me happy to do so. I have boxed myself in with a severe crunch coming up when my depreciated equipment needs some capital improvement.

You and your services are invaluable. It is hard to put a price on peace of mind.
Charge what you think is fair! A lot of your clients seem to have a fair amount of cabbage. Maybe a sliding scale for us destitute?

That would be perfect and enlightened as well. Those who wish to donate to the destitute fund would give me room to offer a discount. Only rule: the VW would have to be primary transportation. Of the customer base I have, I think we could end up with the ability to subsidize two to four half-off visits. A mandatory down payment would be required, however, skin in the game is critical for taking the visit seriously and not flaking out.

I once saw a sign in a shop which more or less said:

Hourly Rate. $80
Hourly Rate if you Watch. $100
Hourly Ratev if you Help. $120

If I can watch, help, do and learn from the Itinerant Professor at the equivalent of a local shop rate: priceless.

Using a local shop rate as a benchmark would be fair and would also address the scale mentioned as I'm sure the shop rate in the NY metropolitan area is much different compared to other regions and comparable, also, to others.

That would help if I broke it up by region.
Right now I want everyone to feel relaxed with my *flat rate* so we can shoot the breeze without any looking at his watch . . .
I couldn't charge you $800.00 to let me watch you blast your superbeetle struts to chunks of twisted metal . . . just $440.00!

Funny! But, you know what? The front end was tightened up, the brake master cylinder was adjusted, I got an intro to double clutching and I thought a little bit more before voting Republican.
Next time we'll be using the beetle to pull the tree stumps left in the wake of superstorm Sandy.
Don't cut your value short. People respect value and will compensate you appropriately.

Yep. Without it, or Colin, or this great community, I'd never have the knowledge to strike out on my own. This forum has literally changed my life, and drastically. For the better? That is yet to be determined!

It's for the better. Experience of failure is better than the familiarity of success. But like a rabbit in the field with hawks circling overhead, you do have to commit to being alert.

Well said. By mistakes, we learn.

One thing I'm always endeavoring to do in my photography is make mistakes.

Preferably new ones. :joker:

Well, thank-you. And you have had so many visits, that is an extra-bonus endorsement.

Without a doubt! The IAC visit is the one event that I look forward to each year. The opportunity to be involved in the process and learn about my bus is worth every penny. Plus, I can rest knowing that we did the very best we could and didn’t just slap something together to get it done. I appreciate your help!

Before we make this an official endorsement from my esteeeeeeemed customer, is your oil leak truly vanquished?
Do we now move on to washing the electrical wires and waxing the top of air intake plenum under the dash?
I can't wait.

( don't be shy)

If you were a gas pump I would charge you 75 cents a mile 65 dollors an hour one way and time on site. Have you ever considered a per customer rate? Maybe excluding extreamly long drives if you could get noone between two really far away customers...maybe a 100 or 200 mile cap? Maybe the first hour is higher, or a minimum amount?

Then a customer sould have the option for more or less service? "Those ball joint boots will be at least a three hour job, wanna go for that or re-dye the black spots on your headliner?"

But i suppose my southern new england is much more local. As a very satisfied customer i would feel terrible if i knew your flat rate coming to me was costing you money. I hope we can set another appointment in the future. Maybe a turning 40 over the hill gift for the bus! We shall see

On a side note my 73 is getting a good dose of snow at the moment, but still the only vehicle ive owned my entire adult life. proudly
