I must say from afar this is most enjoyable reading especially since its happening to someone else. BTW How is the engine running now? Cooler and more power? Freakin idiot who installed those too small valves should be shot the lazy ass....

Funny, I'm reading Stephen King's Cujo right now. The woman and the boy are stranded in their Ford Pinto because of a sticking needle valve. If you see any Saint Bernards, stay in the bus.

Sluggo, you're scaring me. I know for fact you can remove and replace push rod tubes with the heads in place on Type 4 engines. What tripped you up?

I had to pull the tubes (& rockers too) to install the deflector tin that goes under the head. In my haste of trying to get things done quickly, I had left it off.

Well I just want you to know Colin I slept 12 hours Monday after getting that nasty cold you brought with you. I was absolutely miserable at work all day Monday and as I was working at the computer I imagined what it would be like if I were tearing down and rebuilding an engine instead. Wish I could have watched you work. I'm feeling better now. Day three was the worst.

James, hope you are better. I think what you did for Colin was great for all of us on IAC to see. I know what you mean about watching him work his wonders.

btw I love your white walls on your beautifull splittie! The best tires I ever ran on my El were M/S rated from Pep Boys w/o balancing. I payed too much attention to what others were saying on Samba and here about ww and will go back to what he likes best for handling and my wanting him to look sharp

Man, it was a virulent little bugger. I could not imagine hosting some travelling Sneeze Snail Snotting Floor Oiling Crabby Little Office Crasher such as myself.

HOW IS YOUR BUS RUNNING?? We did spend a day with it while my cold remitted and your cold built up. I had fun driving your Type 4 bus like a double-clutching maniac, "dang scooter! these little buggies really move OUT now".

Way cooler, and a little less power.
I traded in some nice tight valve guides and equal combustion chamber volumes and fresh flycuts for these rag-tag junk trailer heads with missing studs and extra-thick grease and caked-in mud and sloppy guides and crescent grooved sealing surfaces at the barrels and questionable plug helicoils, but they now have 850 miles and did a late-night interstate flog with equinamity 345-360*. Fuel economy is still a low 16-18 with the jets I slapped in back in Tucson + the awl-enhanced power circuit. It's a Volkswagen again! Hit the gas and ..... sort of go.
