Way easier! But you can get at a oil cooler leak without pulling the engine on a type 4.

Wow man, those spacers are bad news...at least it was an "easy" fix though.
Congrats, welcome to the club. It is unusual to see you worry a bit about an issue, that's usually my territory! Well we are human after all, even the givers-of-light.

Worried? Naw. I worry when I have no options and not enough information ...

Like my new Lanval Commemorative Volvo tachometer?

Calibration:

Running the wires (no drilling! just use the spare tire drain).

Installed Dakota Digital gauge too:

Little rough, but all easily removeable, shall report results later:

LOL! It looks almost as bad as my temporary oil pressure gauge rubber banded to a windshield wiper so I could see it through the windshield.
What is the tach for? Can't we calculate RPM by final drive ratio x gear ratio?

Yeah that tach is klassy. On such an over the top bus too.

I dunno... it came out of a Volvo 240 ~ personally, I'd say it's the tach that's slummin'!

God bless the bricks, every one!*

It went doofy in Eureka. I need to rewire my wiring extension, and praaaaa--a-a-a-a-ayaaah that it gets rid of the Error Code 6.

I have horrendous unknown until today highway temperatures of 430+ on the modest hills of CA 91. Poor bus, I had no idea. I do have a couple of new main jets to play with. But no one is familiar when I start blabbling about the "power circuit" in the carburetor.
"No, it doesn't have one."
"No, it doesn't need one."
"Haw haw, that is the pilot jet, actually."
"You should put a progressive on it help it breathe."
"No, that's not really a German 30 Pict3, it is?"
"It's the distributor actually, it is supposed to have a SVDA. It does? You want a vacuum only distributor? No such thing."

I am on my own when it comes to figuring this out. I can HEAR Mike laughing.

(p.s. Hippie, I am USING the tachometer to determine my speedometer error! And, I have discovered that I have been short-shifting since Portland because my ear is so deeply calibrated to Type 4 engine, my upshifts have consistantly been at 3,200 rpm into the next gear)

Aha. Clever.
I use a stopwatch function on my phone and mile markers (at least 4-5 to average out any distance error.)

I visited what used to be Sav-A-Bug in Riverside CA yesterday ... after a letter from VOA, it is now a grumpy SAB Enterprise.

This carburetor originally came with a 112 main jet.
"No, that is not correct."
"But it says so in the Bentley."
"That can't be correct."
"Um, here it is."
"Huh. I'll be damned, you don't see those carbs anymore."
I picked up a 117 ("nobody uses these") and a 120.

Then I went to Ross/Marshalls mall and ducked in the back so I could take apart the "new" vacuum only distributor that I had bought at Interstate Parts in Lake Elsinore. I was very happy to discover that it was in quite excellent shape under the rust and the dirt, even used its breaker points (old style brown rubbing block Bosch points) and condensor. As I am attempting to knock out the distributor drive dog roll pin a voice comes booming out from the hedge.
"Can I have a cigarette?"
"No."
"Can I BUY a cigarette from you?"
"No."
"Well why the f@#! not, you m&@*!f&$!@*g s*@%of a b#*@!?"
"Because this is my last one, how about you go buy a pack for me too?"

Got the distributor all shiny and lubricated and together and said a little prayer that Mike has the drive gear slot correctly located in the engine. Pulled out the SVDA and yes! the now original style distributor is matched up perfectly in the engine with #1 correctly oriented and all the spark plug wires can easily avoid touching each other. Vacuum only distributors are timed with the engine off using a test lamp to inform you of exactly when the points open. I timed it to 2*BTDC to split the difference between the confusing marks on the crankshaft. Car started right up. So smooth! No hesitation! Folks, you CAN'T use a SVDA with a vacuum only carburetor. That centrifugal advance adds to the signal and over-advances right off idle. That is one of the reasons why this engine went through such a rough harmonic period when I would rev it up.

Today I shall do a freeway blast to Birdibus' house, and see if the correct distributor has any effect on the CHTs before I start changing jets. Man, once again I have to conclude that these engineers had it figured out ....

I love me my vac-only advance on the bus.

What vacuum only distributor would that be?

Check out type2.com they have massive distributor info. Look under "index" or whatzitsz.

I still have rotten head temps even with the noower smewther distributor.
430 uphill yet it cools dramatically quickly when you coast down. That means the cooling system is fine, but something .... is generating ...... this heat.

New jets tomorrow. I checked valves this morning now that I have seen the readings on that hiwaycallin' Commemorative Dakota Digital Cylinder Head Temperature guage, I thought it best to monitor closely. The rockers and inside head surfaces are shinycleany oily pretty. The dipstick is a littlebittlebitey warm, as is the apron, but it runs well and has good (enough) power (for a Type 1).
Hmmmmm, This is a learning curve. Startled a bus admirer today. He was looking and chatting when I opened the driver's door. He started when he saw that stripped down tach just impaled on the dashboard, "what are you doing, testing and stuff?"
