TBRRD Hits The Road

Post by Amskeptic » Mon Oct 10, 2011 1:45 pm

Folks, what a good bunch in Portland Oregon. I was so demoralized by the rainraintrainchillchillchillboxesofstrewnparts, that the pj Candyred Volkswagen Palace turned out to be a critically necessary bulwark against despondency. Grey morning drizzle was kept a bay with that warm hardwood kitchen fresh coffee and quite catalyzing Scottish oatmeal that I shared with Can-Do Phil and You'reNotDoingTheDishesDolores. We managed to execute a grinding rendition of Simply Replace The Muffler in eight hours with two spent on just putting the ridiculous single piece muffler/heat exchanger clamps:

Although Delores had to park her Volvo in the driveway all summer, I think she might actually miss the TBRRRD:

Image

pj helped me adjust the camber and grease the front end, lubricate linkages and shifter socket, change the transaxle oil, and heck, he managed to mow the lawn too before the VW posse invaded the quiet suburban cul-de-sac:

That fire pit was totally totally welcome:

I woulda camped in the coals, dreaming of Furnace Creek, but I had to go to Yamhill for an appointment with DoubleNickle the very next morning so I could be only an hour and a half late to dinner at Hambone Manor. Thankfully, he drives a Type 1 bus, and reassured me to "get here when you get here."
I am poised to depart after the LuckyLab gathering tonight. I pray that the TBRRD will provide reliable passage to sunshine.

Looking forward to reading more. I'm also not a big fan of getting those heat risers connected up. For some reason the manifold and the muffler never seem to be on speaking terms and don't want to hold hands.

Hey Neal, we have already hit that ten hour mark, an all-nighter to California. It's weird to see the above photograph of the TBRRD just eleven hours ago at the LuckyLab. The parking lamps have been on the entire time til I pulled in here at the California border:
7:06AM
Image

There is some promising light coming through the clouds in the east that may suggest .... like, sunshine? 85* high forecast in Redding? I need some dry warmth. I have several little things to attend to with this car, accelerator pedal creaked all night, hazard light knob doesn't glow with the parking lights (#51 terminal needs a wire from instrument lights daisy chain), passenger door vapor barrier sets up a rattling flappishness, oh, and the monoxide is damn well gonna kill me.

Image

This car is a real sweetheart just trucking along at 60 mph with the generator set at its aural frequency (that is my subconscious cruise control, much easier to keep it dialed in than the BobD), except the hills where I let it just sag down to 43 mph before downshifting into 3rd and holding it at 40. Everything about an earlier bus says "give me time, I will give you your destination ... in time." It is all about "relax! enjoy the road wafting through the headlamp beams", this genteel pace makes it an adventure right there, you find yourself part of a journey that is almost not of your making.

Image

Thank-you's to all who helped me get it all together and on the road.
Thank-you,
Colin

I enjoy watching others zip hurriedly past in frantic rushes on the freeway. You've got it, one mile at a time, with slow climbs. Good to hear TBRRD is getting you there.

I think you'll come to like that pace. Maybe fall in love with the early Bay.

True... but it 'tis awfully fun to get those surprised looks on the highway when you are cruising along passing folks in the left lane doing 70-75 mph when you have a Type IV engine :color: :pottytrain1:

BTW - In the name of full disclosure, I've owned both. :)

:thumbleft: Sorry I missed the lab - 'twas out of town. Looks like the TBRRD has survived it's first leg - it's good to see it on the road again.
