Gettin' excited?

I am.

That Lake looks like a great day hike goal. Wonder if it has fish?

Van's running great and I am bustin to get out.

Prayin for no rain so's we can jam.

Packin' tomorrow.

Looks pretty exposed up there, gonna need good warm clothes (and of course the little buddy heater, but don't tell Bob, he'll just get all twittery about walkin to school three miles through the snow and reading by a tallow candle...)

I have very little wood so's I hope someone is bringin some.
So it all started when I wanted to get better gas mileage....

Yeah I'm a coot-wannabe. I like to force my vision of a perfect world on others. (sit here, you'll feel a slight sting as the wires slide into your skull, there that's it, not too bad is it?)

Memaloose is a nice hiking goal, and there is an abandoned trail that heads along the ridge to the old Cold Springs Ranger Station site that I've been itching to check out. Come on you know you wanna. I've got MAPS!

I'm heading out Friday morning after I drop Eva off at school if anyone wants to join me, 8:30 AM.

Here's the pinpoint forecast for SFM:
(Saturday is the loose cannon, looks like there may be some early morning wetness. Rest of the weekend looks nice.)

Friday: Sunny, with a high near 75. East wind around 7 mph.
Friday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 49.
Saturday: A chance of rain before 6am, then a chance of showers, mainly before 11am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 66. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
Saturday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 49.
Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 71.

Important: we will mark the turnoff off 4540 up to S. Fork Mtn. If we can't camp there for whatever the reason, continue on 4540 and we'll be somewhere down the road. We'll be someplace obvious so don't sweat it.

The latest, it looks like it will be wet on Saturday.

Friday: Sunny, with a high near 78. East southeast wind at 9 mph becoming north northeast.
Friday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 49. Northwest wind 6 to 8 mph becoming southwest.
Saturday: Rain likely before 6am, then showers likely, mainly before 11am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 63. West southwest wind between 11 and 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%.
Saturday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 46.
Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 71.

You guys want to move this thing down below the trees, or should we keep it up on S. Fork? Here's some info on the camp near the Cold Springs Ranger Station site:
Yes, you could have a decent camp at Cold Springs. There is a faint spring at the site, a real good one down the Cold Springs trail a little ways, and a pretty good one south on the old trail to Baty, Round, Divide.. the old Bagby Trail a hundred yards or so.
It's kind dark on account the [old growth] hemlock grove it's in.
Barry and I can scope out the site tomorrow AM; if it's not as cool then we can just keep it at S. Fork.
Or MAYBE (maybe) I put too much into these things. I get the feeling you guys aren't too concerned about the particulars. Which is fine! HAAHAHAAHHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

If we can drive to the top of the MT. Let's do it.

My only concerns there would be windy conditions. U would hate to get a roaring fire to keep warm that speww cinders of the side otf the hill...(though it will be wet)

Looking at that ridge over to the lookout looks like it should be a nice day hike. Not alot of elevation change and pretty hard to get lost.

Allrighty then. I'll bring my fancy big awning thing.
We've had a fire up there in the wind a couple times, no big deal. We'll probably need one!
I am most excited. Can't wait to see you guys.

Single dashed lines on maps are trails, double dashed lines are dirt roads. The red ones are from the 1935 map. The arrow is because I located the old ranger station in the wrong spot. The rest of the lines are map contour lines; closer together means a steeper slope. Didn't mean for that sideways pic to be a reference, just to give you an idea of the trails in the area. For navigation, use the other map I posted.
We are going to the top of S. Fork Mountain which you circled.

Image

From Portland:
OR224 to Estacada
Right on OR211 towards Molalla
A few miles climbing, then you start going downhill.
Left on Hillockburn Road
Hillockburn Road turns into FS45
Right on FS4540
Left on FS4540-140 (somewhat steep, deep gravel road. Don't take the dirt road just before, it's the wrong one)
Look for an IAC NW sign at the turnout
No sign, then continue down FS4540 to plan B camp.

ALSO,
FS45 is a loop. It continues all the way back to the Clackamas River. You can get to the camp by taking OR224 into Mt. Hood NF and turning left on FS45 (Memaloose Road) but it's steeper and lots of goomba traffic and shooting galleries. I think the Hillockburn route is better. Be wary of potholes though, they sneak up on ya.

I heared that it might rain. Looks like we'll probly lose the dainty ones.....although Kirk is already going out to play in the mud... :pirate:

Anyone else gonna bail cause it MIGHT rain?....

I have one of them fancy raincoat thingies so I'll be there... :geek:

Whoever gets there first should try to guage prevailing wind and see if we can get the busses set up to create a windblock if needed.

I think I'll get some gut warming hooch...

I'll see you out there, probably in the nighttime.
Funny how they always drop like flies once the date rolls around!

Have a good visit with yer dad Barry.

Driving to the camp solo...Yeah that does make it less fun.

Maybe I should stick around the house. Sounds like Bob is gonna be too bummed to hang with.... :pirate:

Maybe John will be able to cheer him up.

I know I smile everytime I see that purple bus.

Oh, heck, I guess I'll drag myself out there. I do have to put my eyeballs and earholes on that JG rebuild.

You are funny, you want companionship...but not too much.

I would think you were crazy, but I know what you mean.
