June 25-27 2009 Oregon Camp Trip - South Fork Mountain
Site of a former fire lookout, good views and you can camp on top.
Just thought I'd throw something out there again, it's been a while.
Down Clackamas way, near Memaloose Lake.
(of course I have to work on Sunday)

I'd love to make this, but I think between Maupin before and Oregon Country Fair after, probably not. I have, however, hiked that trail up past Memaloose Lake to the top, some great views. You could hike down from the top to the lake and get some good fishing or swimming I bet.

That's exactly where the camp is, amongst the littered debris of the former lookout (which was burned down by the F.S. in the 60s to "take it off the books")
What the heck were you doin way out at Memaloose? Long way from Bend!
It is a really interesting area. Lots of trails and exploring.
Well, next time. I'm sure we'll have something going in July.
Road trip to the Ochocos?

Ochocos for sure! Please! I really love it up there, once you get remote enough. Went up there last year, just drove and drove and found a nice little spot to camp over night and watch the Perseids meteor shower.

I hiked Memaloose and past a long time ago when I was living in Portland, probably about 1999. Beautiful hike from the bottom, steep, but a great hike.

Maybe in late summer (August?) we can get a trip going over there. Word has it there is a great spot near Lookout Mountain in fantastic old growth. It's a beautiful drive from Portland too.
I didn't know you lived in Portland. Did ya like it? Why Bend? Seems like a great location but cost-prohibitive unless you have a specialized gig or retired.

satchmo and I were also going to try to hatch a Wallowa area campout later in the season...maybe we can combine efforts on this one? Would be a longer trip for you guys but the area is supposed to just awesome.
BTW Hammie there are some AMAZING forests in N. Cali, saw a ton of monster ponderosa pines all over the place.

Think it will be clear by next week? Almost 5000'.
There is a road to the top that isn't shown.

I'll check around, there's always a plan b anyway.

That trail up starts where FR45 crosses Memaloose creek, on Google's terrain map you can see its a steep hike. I'll give the full "born in Portland, moved to Bend, moved to Portland, moved to Bend" story in Maupin, it's a good one. :)

Permit me to BUMP this sucka.
A nice trip to wildlands would be a nice change from all the busy-busy.
I'd be able to leave Portland just after noon on Thursday, I have to take the kid to the doctor for shots poor thing.
If S. Fork Mtn turns out to be snowed in, there are plenty of other options.
