We got the spot at Wooded Wonderland. It was much more pleasurable this time around. Stars above, a nice fire, a crazy sounding owl, scared the kids and dogs. It cooled off and sleeping was excellent. Rob made a gallon of coffee. Pancakes for the little ones.locoqueso wrote:Where did you end up?

Very cool, it looks much dryer there this time of year.
I got all my homework done over the weekend and ended up with my worst grade for the class on one of the assignments. I should have went camping.

Nice. What was the owl "saying"? Did it sound almost human? Cause that happened to me a few times there and then I heard the same shriek out in Oregon with Hambone far off in the distance. I think the last time I was at Wooded Wonderland (July) I got there at 4 am and I was sitting having a smoke in the dark (by myself) when the coyotes started a ruckus that was just a treat. They were right there at the bend in the road. That's what 50 yards?

I wish I knew my bird calls better. I think it was an owl, probably similar to what I heard. The first time we heard it - a few years back, it made the hair on the back of my balding head stand up. This was after sun-up and we were trying to get to sleep. I couldn't get to sleep for an hour after that. I thought it was somebody messing with us. It was a stone's throw away and like you said: threatening. We heard it again the next night. I think it's a territorial warning. We were the only people around at the spot etc.. Fun stuff now though since I've heard it a few more times since.

I think the owl was saying, waaaaaaaaaaaH! (listen up 'cause I'm gonna do a regular hoot next)
Than he did the hoot thing.
Critters rock.
Anyway, I think I have still a couple in my phone. I'll check and see if they turned out.

That's your bus man? A rare bird in the Midwest. Looks very well loved. I always camped in Beetles at Galena. Later a Ford Ranger. You can fit a LOT of gear in a Beetle, it's surprising.
So cool to see you guys keeping th tradition going!!!! I'll see if I can dig up some old Galena pics.
Have you walked up thru the forest to the ruins of the original home? It's a couple miles up. That's a fun hike in the dark with lanterns.

Yeah. That's the same thing we heard but it didn't do a hoot after that. So, never having heard that before then, it was a little disturbing so close to our vanagon in the relative stillness of the morning twilight.Hippie wrote:I think the owl was saying, waaaaaaaaaaaH!
