Head out the Clacky. There's usulally several spots at the developed (pit toilets no shower) grounds.
Alder flat is nice, specially with a bus and the river is a mere 1/2 mile stroll through some pretty country.
You may even be interested in a hike in with a tent and coupl'a sleepybags
All the coolness of backpackin' without the heavily loaded trek.
I went in there once with a bunch o' city folk and actually used a handtruck to haul a cooler and milkcrates of gear for car type campin'.
My tastes have been leaning toward further out. Even just a little further than Ripplebrook RS will bring you some nice spots.

If this didn't open with ripplebrook then type ripplebrook and pick one.

Ainsworth State park. I84. 33 miles from downtown. nice little site, at least when I was there last.
close to Gorge stuff (falls, eagle creek trail).
speaking of... there is a little loop near the eagle creek hatchery that has camping.
Lots of birds of prey flyin' around there too and a great little hiking trail. I recommend the hike to tunnel falls..

We drove through Ainsworth SP a couple of weeks ago on the way to Hood River. We wrote down a couple of the nicer sites but can't remember what numbers they were at the moment. There were also a couple of trail heads in the campground plus all of the old scenic highway trail heads real close too. We thought it would be a nice spot for a quick over nighter some weekend.
Chorizo, it's what's for breakfast.
