Summer Camping in Oregon 2016

Post by hambone » Wed Jun 29, 2016 1:46 pm

Hi, some of you already know I am planning a big project in the wilderness lands of Mt. Hood. For most of July I will be heading North to South, piecing together a long abandoned but once very popular trail. It once went from Mt. Hood to Crater Lake, but is now long gone, abandoned to the forest.
I would LOVE to have some occasional company out there, to keep me sane and to help navigate the especially wild sections of the trail. I have been preparing for this for months, I now have a good quality GPS and the Bus is running pretty well.
Towards the end of July I will be planning a couple Bus Camps, so that may work for you as well. As I work my way south I will keep the progress updated as much as possible. The Trail follows roads a lot of the way so it should be pretty easy to find me.

If you are interested in joining me for some wilderness time, please let me know and I will keep you in the loop. I will also try to keep this thread up to date.

Thank you! More details to follow. I am starting the journey in a few days!

Please, keep me in the loop. I usually have trouble getting out in the woods when everyone else does because of my work schedule, but if you're out all month that could work really well with my odd Thursday/Friday "weekends".

First leg I'm leaving Sunday the 3d. Hopefully.
I'll not be expecting anyone unless you tell me ahead of time. If you're interested I'll post a map or 2.

Wow, have a fun trip Bob! I'd love to see a map anyway!

Is this the same trip as the one for late July 22nd-ish?

1 Near Trillium Lake, need some time to myself. Couple of days? I'm planning on staying at each camp no longer than 2 days. These are all maintained trails.

2 Jackpot Mdw https://www.google.com/maps/dir/45.1732 ... 179,13.25z

3 https://www.google.com/maps/dir/45.1733 ... 648,14.25z

#3 I'm not exactly sure where I'll be, not sure about camping around there. I want to stay close to the trail. I will put up an orange VW hupcap if I know someone's coming. The camps in this area will probably be pretty makeshift....but what the hell.

DJeep gave me a SPOT messenger locator years ago, finally bellied up the $160 to activate it. And it's broken. So the nice SPOT people are sending me a good semi obsolete model for another 50 bucks. Yeah well it's good in case I wander off.
I am leaving Portland either Sunday or early Monday, coming back on the weekend. I am extremely looking forward to this....you have no idea, I have lived 20 lives the past 2 weeks. It will be wonderful to mix solitude, wilderness, history, and friends.

Hambone called me from wherever he found cell service and said he's aiming for Spot #2 at the 240/241 fork.

Can't get out this weekend because my parents are blasting into town for a few days and delivering a boat and a commercial dishwasher for me, and an antique washing machine for Mike Boell. Maybe next weekend...

Back from the first week! All by myself, loved most of it...7 days, haven't been so alone in 15 years. It was great, I only thought of 1921, and girls.
SO MUCH HISTORY out there! I was blown away. Hiked many miles. Found ALL of the trail from my starting point, so far. Many adventures.
Not sure yet on my departure back into the boonies, I am hoping to be in Stumptown for only a couple days.
PS I am very stinky. Even for me. And my new boots are falling apart! Geesh. I was a mountain man! Weird being back. Kept referring to myself as "we".
Oh I found a sister camp to Hambone! Same era. Nobody showed up though I stayed an extra day and the skeeters ate me alive.
