Perrot & Willow River, W. Wisconsin 2013

Post by sped372 » Wed Jul 24, 2013 6:50 am

We took a long weekend to revisit a couple places we've enjoyed before... Perrot State Park is on the Mississippi River just north of Trempealeau and Willow River further North near Hudson. We enjoyed the scenery of the valley while driving up the Great River Road (Hwy 35) and had a quick lunch before the sun was at full force.

We checked in and drove to our site overlooking the hills and the water. The scenery was gorgeous, but the gnats and flies were definitely irritating, they seem to be bad everywhere this year. Luckily we had planned ahead and bought a cheap screen tent before the trip as an insurance policy. As the sun went down things really took on a prehistoric look.

We rented a canoe the next day and paddled around the backwaters, which was fun. It had been a relatively hot couple of days, so we wished there was a swimming area, but at least our site was shaded. We packed down before going to bed, anticipating rain the next morning for our drive to Willow River.

After a rainy morning and a stop at a terrible place for breakfast, our drive was over and we arrived at the park ready for a new campsite. This one was also very nice, and had the benefit of being much less buggy. We did a few hikes and were generally lazy and enjoyed the beautiful weather. The falls were just as pretty as we remembered and the wildflowers were showing nicely.

Drove back yesterday through the hills of Western Wisconsin and were happy to have a tailwind. Altogether it was about 550 miles and was a very enjoyable trip.
