Itinerant Air-Cooled Greetings From Pennsylvania

Post by Amskeptic » Wed Jun 27, 2007 10:22 am

Car got broken into at the Knight's Inn. Broken glass all over the parking lot. But it wasn't mine. I left my car unlocked so it won't get damaged by people who think they might want something of mine.

They missed the Dremel tool kit and the floor jack under the middle seat.
They missed the sound-attenuating headphones in the black bag under the towel behind the driver's seat.
They couldn't get the tool box open because they didn't know how to release the drawer lock.
Laser thermometer, nah.
They missed the $380 cash in the notebook divider flap.
They were interested in not one of the plastic flowers along the
tailgate hinges, sliding door, or dash.
They apparently did not want my bottle of vitamins or
tire pressure gauge or owner's manual in the glovebox.
No respect for the Kenwood AM/FM Cassette player.
Didn't want my KLH speakers.
My leather jacket? Not even a thief wanted it.
Nary a Diet Coke was missing.
I am crushed. They must have been disappointed.
But they sure did trash the interior in their restless search for whatever.
I got a good chance to sweep and clean.
Apparently, the Ford F-350 took the brunt of their wrath at my uninteresting bus, its driver's window was shattered.

The proprietor asked if I wanted to call the police and
I just told them no damage no worries.

A few days ago, the odometer passed 81,262 miles (my original odometer reading when I bought it) for the 5th time since I have owned it. It is 529,388 actual miles. . . I only came to realize that the odometer reliably reads 9/10ths of actual mileage travelled after about ten years.

Brought back memories of the prior ones. The original reading was burned into my mind as a reflection of its condition, I remember being nervous when it hit the 90's and was really nervous when it hit 100,000.
.
Second 81,262 (199,388 actual) came up right around Chicago in a snow storm where my heater was trying to asphyxiate me. Third time was L.A. (309,388) when I was a student at U.C.L.A. and 4th time (419,388) was when I drove across the country after rebuilding the engine at the Glendale Machinist's parking lot while the hills burned in August 2002. That means this "new" crankshaft now has 110,000 miles + with me. My original crankshaft I retired at 419,000 miles. I had to re-do all of his work when I got back (mis-matched rods, faked new valve guides) and that was the Dining Room Engine photographed in the Samba gallery. So with the 9/10ths readings factored in, the Dining Room Engine now has 121,000 miles with Winnie Texas blued rods and JB Welded gallery plugs.
Okaaaay, the thunderstorm is upon us, I am signing off.
