Oil Bath Air Cleaner - With Preheat

Post by hambone » Sun Mar 14, 2010 6:09 pm

Yay! Another project done...and it works!
Picked up this mess of an air cleaner last spring, so oily I couldn't hold it without rags. Of course the thermostat didn't work. $5 at the Woodburn VW show, next to a grass farm, in spring...living hell for the sneezy.

Well I finally got around to restoring the thing. Thanks go to German Supply for the NOS part, without it this wouldn't be possible.

What a weird gizmo but it seems to work. I'm keepin an eye on that sucker until I trust it. So far the engine seems happy with preheat.

I think it is cool that you are livening up your engine compartment color scheme.

They're out there in various states of disrepair. Maybe I can restore a couple more, it was rewarding.

Thanks! I'm trying to go for that 1930s racing plane motif.
It took me a long time to decide on orange. I really liked the burnished metal after sanding but it woulda been too much work to finish it all that way. I really wanted tomato red but ya can't buy it in regular rattle-can.
Of course now I'm all paranoid that it's not gonna work right, but I get like that after taking things apart.

I'm tellin ya, it needs a vintage-style Fram decal with that paint. Something along teh lines of this one, though .. not this one, it's for an oil filter.

That looks beautiful - something tells me it didn't actually take you that long to decide on orange - that's your color dude. You're a summer.
