1981 Vanagon - Won't Run. Fuel Issue?

Post by Kubelwagen » Wed Sep 09, 2009 10:14 am

Hey,

So the "new" vanagon (81) backfired when I turned the key this morning and then would start, but not idle.

Smelled fuel when I lifted the lid, but didn't have time to trouble shoot beyond looking for loose wire.

Gypsie - may need FI help!

Check the vacuum hoses first. If one got knocked loose you would have just the condition you describe.

Amazing the amount of trouble caused by vacuum leaks. Seems to be the #1 culprit for idle issues.

Ditto on vac testing. (All the usual suspects AAR elbow, brake booster, sboot connections etc.)

Have you done anything in the engine bay recently?
So it all started when I wanted to get better gas mileage....

If it's not a vacuum leak, it may be your double relay. Sounds like the same problem I was having.

Vacuum it was. Not sure what was disconnected before the backfire, but several were after.

Got the boy (10) behind the wheel to start the engine so I could chase - his first time running a car. I can tell that I need to replace some hoses, there's still a little hiss on shutdown that I couldn't find but it is running fine.

Need to take a little tour of some of the things that have been disconnected over the years during a Lucky Lab night. I think that I found where the A/C hooks up....

Thanks to all - this place is going to be a big help towards getting me up to speed.
