Yes, you're right! Several people suggested it was a fuel problem. I ruled it out when I thought I saw fuel going in with the mirror.

So it first ran poorly when I took it for a test drive and then I realized that I had the two vacuum hoses to my dual-vac distributor mixed up. Just switched them, retimed the engine, and took it for a nice fast freeway run. Even passed a Honda minivan!

There is still a lot of backfiring on deceleration and the idle is high too, so I think there must be something out of balance with the carbs. I tried to carefully count the turns on all the jets and stuff when I took them apart, but not carefully enough apparently. I'll adjust them per Colin's tune-up instructions.

Still it's very nice to have a functional bus again.

Check for speed up/down when you remove/attach its vacuum hose with the engine at idle.We want to make sure that the retard unit is pulling the idle down.
