Fuel Pressure Regulator Question

Post by LiveonJG » Fri Apr 10, 2009 6:19 pm

Between the tin and the pressure regulator I found a substance like duct seal. No mention in Bentley about this and while I can easily put some back, do I need to? I can't really figure out why it was there in the first place except maybe (and it's a big maybe) it provided some shock absorption for the regulator. BTW, duck seal, if you don't know is a putty that never hardens.

Thoughts?

Observations?

Nevermind, it was acting as a spacer. I replaced it with an o-ring and all is well.

I just used a piece of cork gasket cut to fit.
Chorizo, it's what's for breakfast.

That would work. I don't know, it took me about ten minutes to get all that crap off the regulator and the o-ring was so simple and clean. I don't get it. Why? Why f-it up when a simple answer is obvious?

Did it look like an assembly line dab of sealant, or PO craziness?
If it was original, it was probably cheaper to use than o-ring. VW used a lot of caulk around the alternator tin too. They were nutso on keeping warm under-air from contaminating the engine compartment.

It was PO craziness, no doubt. A big honking wad. I've run into the factory sealant and this was nothing like that at all.
