1977 Bus FI Rebuild

Post by Sluggo » Wed Jan 28, 2009 11:55 am

Can anyone take a look at the pics and let me know what I am missing. I know I need an air cleaner (the PO is still looking for all the FI parts). I have the comp, harness, pump, relay, muffler & cat and they are still attached to the bus.

Pictures aren't going to cut it here. Go to your Bentley. Look at the pictures. See if you have what the Bentley shows. Look at the schematic for 1977. See if all wire terminal ends are accounted for in the harness and the parts that attach to them. Check out the fuel line schematic. See if your parts all make a continguous loop form the tank outlet to the tank inlet. Then ask specific questions. . . :cyclopsani:

I'd say you need an auxiliary air regulator to add to your FI confusion.

You'll also need a working egr valve (pull yours to see if it holds vacuum) to get you through smog, egr/throttle body linkage, an egr filter and the tube that connects them. The smog parts can be a bitch to source but, as you know, you'll need to get it all patched together eventually to continue to register it in CA. I've no idea of the smog rules in Oregon though!

AS of now, Oregon doesn't care about how your engine gets clean air out the tailpipe so long as it has a Catalytic Converter if it should have one. EGR, FI parts etc.. they don't care or check under the hood.
The best navigators aren't sure where they're going until they get there. And then they're still not sure.

Sluggo, I have a catalytic converter in my parts stash, if you need one.

thermo time switch, fuel pressure regulator, unless that is one under the fuel pump and decel valve. Temp sensor II, throttle return spring.

DAMN YOU!!! Making me study and learn.

I actually studied the schematic during lunch today. I just wasn't near my New Bus so I couldn't confirm.

Thanks but I already have one. The cat & smog correct muffler are still attached to the engine/exhaust.

Can I use the Heater boxes from a '72 with the '77 exhaust & cat?

Err, nope. That rigamorale under there is to collect all the exhaust in one spot for passage through the cat. To get room for this all-in-one collection, they send the exhaust frontwards out of the manifolds, loop it around through the separate heat exchangers to the croosover and then into the cat. Here, study this:

I see. I should've just crawled under and taken a look at the exhaust before I asked. I'm replacing it with my engine so I just looked at the cat, muffler and that u pipe to make sure they weren't rusted out.

Please don't tell me the '77 boxes are square port.

Also, do I have to have specific heads for FI?

77 is oval like my 78. Compared to the earlier T4 exhaust, it sucks. Let me know if you need help with the smog equipment. I may have some spares and/or loaner parts.

Good to know. And thanks for the offer. I may have to take you up on that.
