1969 Bus Oil Bath Cleaner

Post by hambone » Tue Dec 30, 2008 11:56 am

In the effort to make everything right again, I would like to get the warm air control flap (thermostat controlled from exhaust to carb) working again. It is currently disconnected by P.O.

Questions: in the 6 years I've owned the bus, this part hasn't been "needed". Is there any damage resulting in it not being connected?

Would the '71 oil bath filter with the integrated thermostat be a better option as a replacement?

Are Ghia and Bus filters interchangable?

thank you!

Geez I forgot I posted this.
It's been hard to find '71 air cleaners. Will be on my "some day" list. Thanks.

Is this a '71? How can you tell? It does have the vacuum connections on top if that means anything.

that listed item is a ten dollar piece of obsolescence, if the rubber has no cracks at all. the 71s have the spring/thermostat, on the right side of the horn, that sprungs into action once heated. if you find a useable 71, and there's hardly a reason why it would be a crap part, that could be worth twenty-five shellies.

Hiya Bob,

I'm thinking that is not a 71 (wax pellet thermostat). I saw a bunch (5 or 6 anyway) Ghia/Type2 kinda air filters out at Trafton's when were there. It might be worth looking out thattaway.

But there is a BIG problem with any VW air filter dependant on a wax pellet thermostat. The thermostat module is often shot and replacements are very hard to find. The air filter I sold to Gypsy had such a problem and I just located another wax pellet thrmostat (I hope it works!) for him.

On the other hand...........do you have the all-important thermostat cable arm on your right hand flapset? If you do, I can show you how to rig up your original air filter thermostat cable. Total cost less than $10.

I am going to order a oil bath cleaner for my Bus, but my shelf for the cleaner is long gone. Anyone have a picture of how it looks? Is a 67 engine bay have the same shelf? I know what the shelf looks like, like this:

Bookwus, where is that picture of your engine bay?

I don't have the lever, alas. Wonder if there's another way to rig something up.

67 does not have a shelf. It bolts to the top of the engine bay.

Hiya Bob,

I do have a couple of extra "armed" flapsets. But I'm thinking that getting the flapset replaced is way too much bother. But I do have 'em if you're interested.

Hiya Sly,

I can post up that picture of my 70's engine bay if you'd like. But as has been mentioned by the Spiff, it's a different mount for the air filter on a 67. As I recall, the air filters for the pre-Bays are a big humongous kinda thing.

Hope you don't mind BW, but I posted a picture of RD as an example of what I needed. Believe it or not, VDubTech is going to hack out the shelf from his 71 for me, so I am sooooo close to something that resembles stock.

I think you have to pull the engine to get to those flaps. Maybe next time. That's why I thought of the '71 cleaner.

I can assure you that the full resources of Dewey, Cheatham, and Howe will be brought to bear in this egregious infringement of property rights.

Lemme know if you need any measurements to correctly spot your "pizza tray" for welding.

Hey Bob,

Precisely my thought regarding the flapset. I'll bet Colin could get the flapset out and replaced without dropping the engine. Hmmmmm..........I wonder how he'd go about doing that.
