Stalling 1983 vanagon 1.9 fuel injected

Post by tony_de_whitt » Sun Oct 07, 2007 12:50 am

Hello all.

Im new to this site but was given it from a site in the uk, just kampers.
Im fairly new to the fuel injected 1.9 water cooled engine as i used to own a 1976 aircooled when i was living in the UK. Im now in australia where everything seems to be fuel injected kombi wise.
Anyway Im having a bit of a problem with the van stalling at idle. It runs well going through the gears and when up to speed but randomly cuts out when idling. It doesnt do it all the time and is starting to annoy me as whenever i go to look at it its ok.
Im going to have a proper look next weekend and was wondering if i could tap into the american VW knowledge.
Im going to change the fuel filter and check the valve clearances.
Is it worth checking the timing? What is the timing for these buses?
ive got the bently manual but need to know the problem to be able to fix it.
Is it easy to depressurise the fuel system and pressure it back up again?
Is there a set pressure for the system and if so how do you check it.
Anything else that you can all think of worth checking let me know.
Thanks in advance

Most likely vacuum leak..check intake, hoses etc..

Classic Vanagon symptom . . . but I must ask, do you have an idle stabilizer? The idle stabilizer is a largish aluminum cylindrical item hosed to the intake plenum and upstream of the throttle plate. It was installed on watercooled engines with power steering and A/C. The idle stabilizer has a printed circuit board crammed at the right rear of the engine compartment to instruct it to maintain correct engine idle under a variety of conditions. There is a solder joint that breaks very subtly and kills the idle bang dead then the connection recovers miraculously, often when the engine goes into that last shake as it dies.
