D-Jet/L-Jet Retrofit ECU

Post by KitCarlson » Thu Sep 04, 2014 3:21 pm

Hi All,

This is about an engine management ECU that I developed around 2003. While this topic is about Fuel Delivery, engine management includes other functions such as ignition and idle speed control. I am not spamming, nor selling units, but want to share my work, and perhaps help others, if they plan to install an aftermarket ECU.

I am a retired EE. I have worked much of my career developing factory test and automation equipment, and as a design engineer developing industrial controls and measurement systems. My interest in cars and automotive electronics goes back to the early 70's.

I built my first unit in 2003 for a D-Jetronic replacement, and recently installed a L-Jetronic replacement. My unit has been tested on about 10 engines including ones with turbos.

The system uses the stock manifolds, fuel regulator, cylinder head temperature sensor, and throttle bodies. Not used, are distributor mechanical and vacuum advance mechanisms, rotor, ignition coil, cold start injector, cold start thermostat, throttle switches, MPS, MAF, thermostatic air regulators, manifold pressure limiters, and many hoses. Added is a simple optical distributor timing sensor, quad coil, throttle position sensor, air intake sensor. I may have left out a few details, but this is what is apparent to me at the moment.

The system is programmable with all sorts of tables and settings for fuel and ignition timing. It also works closed loop with O2 sensor.

They always say a picture is worth 1,000 words. So I will start with those. I will post a few, then post more as I find them on other PC's used in the original development. As questions arise, I will try my best to explain how the system works, and how it was developed.

The green cell shows the active cell. This helps to spot cells in the tuning process. The cell locations change by RPM and MAP values. The fuel values are interpolated using corner cells.

The interpolation of this table is similar to VE table. Base timing set by distributor reference is added to the table derived value. It is displayed in real time and logged in chart.

Anroid screen shot, under development.
There are many other features of the user interface. Data may be logged at various rates to a text file on PC. Setting may be imported and exported as files. There are many features not show, the interface capability follows the FW on the EMS2. For Turbo the MAP sensor is changed to a 2.5 Bar unit, or if O2 is used, then more tables and parameters are show.

I have also written applications for Android devices, and use Bluetooth instead of a wired RS232 connection to unit.
