Or is it out of commission till then?
You can use it. Make sure fuel delivery is sealed up good, make sure air filters are secure, make sure #4 is not lean in comparison to other barrels, it is not just airflow un-synchronization that can cause backfires.

A sticky valve will give you sporatic clanks noticeable at idle with a little hiccough as it sticks open and gets tapped shut by a piston.

Compression test revealed no problems. We got Bottomend's carbs ready to go. Had to do some mods to the linkage. I'll install them tomorrow.

Not really. These carbs will only be on till I get some others. I'm looking at some 36 Webers or 36 Dellortos. Besides, I don't think it was the tuning. I think there is just something really wrong with these carbs.

Sounds like you're stuck in a "throw money at it until it's fixed" loop.

Sorry man.

Usually a vehicle at that point is symbolic of gross neglect. The happy news is once it's back to it's German ways it tends to remain that way for quite some time. Yer getting there, everything that you encounter now and fix properly won't come back.

I was. But these carbs are the only x-factor. I put as much into them as it would take to buy a new set. Engine rebuilt, new fuel system, New (to me) rebuilt heads. The only thing the same is the carbs. All of my problems except the dropped seat and oil pressure has been carb related. Same crappy mileage before and after the rebuild. Carbs have been rebuilt twice but they are the same carbs with the same problems no matter what I do. I'll finish hooking up Bottomend's Dellortos today. If I get the same crappy mileage, I know it's a problem with something else. If my problems miraculously disappear, I'll know it was the carbs.

The only real problem I have with these Dellortos is that there is no vacuum port for the dizzy and two fuel inlets on each carb. I have to figure out how to plug those up safely.

I know it was very neglected by a bunch of dirty hippies before I got it. I've had a lot of problems and have done a lot of work but I've also learned a lot and the Bus gets better with every repair. Like I said, the carbs are the last x-factor.

Can't use Bottomend's carbs. The throttle (uh that rod under the carb) hits my vacuum pipe. I've already bought my Weber 36s. They should be here in a week. Went with these jets.
