So WTF? I have been doing it correctly? You can tell when a car is leaning out based on the exhaust smell.

I am tracking down that post. For fun, I will tell them I just melted my Raby engine because of them.

The volume control screw is a fancy stupid name for something that can be etched in your mind forever and correctly as the "mixture screw." The Little Mixture Screw is in the vicinity of the Big Brass Screw which does the idle speed adjustment.

What the writer got totally lost in, was the behavior of that circuit at off-idle transistion. With a closed throttle plate, that screw changes the mixture, end of story.
IN > CLOCKwise = LEAN.
OUT < COUNTERclockwise = RICH.
