'71 Bus Distributor Upgrade.

Post by regis101 » Wed Mar 25, 2009 7:09 pm

Writing for a friend of mine. I did a search and most dizzy questions seem to come to this forum.

The '71 Bus has a '68 Beetle engine in it at this time. I suppose it's a 1600. I'm not sure, fully. It has a single carb. I'll have to find out what model it is. I don't want to let my vagueness deter from the question.

The distributor is a vacuum advance only 205T. It's pretty well worn out, and I'm looking for options.

My stock-ish senses say to get a stock '71 Bus unit.

The SVDA's would be a catered step (hopefully), into the modern world.

There is a chance to obtain an 010. I only have some generic graphs for the 010. I am of the opinion that its curve is too aggressive for a Bay Bus. I'd like opinions of the 010 for this application.

Thanks.

Nah, you want a vacuum advance for an early Beetle engine. The one you have is perfect for what you need, why not get it rebuilt? There's a place in Portland that does them, probably near you too. Philbin here also sells rebuilt ones. I'd check it out, not too expensive.
SVDA will not work well with the earlier carbs.
I'm running a 1600 S/P in a '69 bus with a '68 vac. advance dist.

So you're using a vacuum ( only) advance? That is what the 205T is.

I've been on the site with the guys in Portland. I'm going to give them a call
to see if they'll blueprint an OE dizz from my '78.

The 30/31 Pict2 carb works with vacuum-only distributor.
A 34 Pict3 wants the vacuum/centrifugal advance distributor, and in 1971, the factory 34 Pict3 was designed to work with a vacuum retard + advance + centrifugal distributor in conjunction with the dual port manifolds and heads.

Thanks static. I have all of that info. It seems that the important thing is to know what carb is on the Bus. I haven't got that info yet.
