An addendum, do not hand-sand with the engine off. The commutator strips need to be very round if you want your brushes to last. Clean the area between each commutator strip with an awl so the surface is just below the running surface of the commutator. Then do the popsicle stick sanding with your idling engine. Always have the stick contacting to the right side of the commutator. I use fine carborundum, it comes in a reddish roll. Classic sandpaper sheds gritty particles all over the place, you seriously do not want that.

(P.S. I have found a modified paper clip does a good enough job of yanking down the spring on the lower brush so you don't have to bend your eyeballs around corners. With the Type 3 engines, just loosen the hold down and rotate the generator 180*. When done, realign it exactly where it was)

Thanks. I'll do it with the generator out of the engine.
The brush hold down spring is pretty much in line with the steel brush holder, is it actually time for brush replacement?

The bottom side brush is nuts. Working with a mirror and a tiny-ass flashlight, I got mine done on the doublecab yesterday. I would never want to do that in the rain, on the side of the road day or night. the upside was my flaps sold me a set of German Bosch brushes for three bucks.
