Dead tranny

So the fresh oil sure didn't give the transaxle in Gretchen much additional life. It's toast. Wanted to have a fresh engine finished before I put the used transaxle I picked up from Bookwus in. So, scrambling now.
More new territory for me. Dang.

When the manual says "Carriage bolts", is it talking about the two big honkin' ones going into the end of the cradle forks?

A) What manual?
B) Year and model of car
C) Chapter and page of above named manual
D) At least quote the sentence in which your question arises
Carriage bolts are usually round smooth heads with square "key" at the shank, like the bumper bolts.

Bentley. Taking transmission out. Page 14, chapter three, '70 to '78 type 1. Remove bolts from front mounting, position jack, "Remove the transmission carrier bolts." Carrier, not carriage, my fault. but still, the two big ones on the end of the tines of the "fork"?

Got it. The "forks" I'm referencing is actually the transmission "carriage". Two 27 mm bolts, those big ones that re-torque to 166 ft lbs. The "carriage bolts".
Sometimes I can be absolutely much too literal.

Doh!
Forgot to undo the shift coupler.
Anyone have any experience with polyurethane shock mounts for the transaxle?

My thought was to replace the shock mounts while there, they are 41 years old. Stock is my first impulse, but I suspect polyurethane are more readily available. Maybe they don't need replacing. The bell housing ones seem spongy still.

They shouldn't be spongy, but rubber ones are (last I checked) readily available. You'll be hating life with the poly ones .. been there done that.
The time to change them is definitely now, because the nuts holding them to the transaxle are inside the bellhousing. Changing them later would require an engine drop...

Perimeter seals? You mean firewall and engine seals?
Found the two bell housing mounts locally for $9.58 each, or $12.50 each, not sure if they are the same manufacturer, but suspect not. One vendor/shop advices re-using the front to body mount if it isn't cracked because of the disappointing quality of the replacements that are all that's available.
