Bad rings won't really scream noise. Valve guides enter my mind. But again more oily black than white for rings or guides.

Valve Guide Wear: throttle overrun/letting off the gas

Piston Ring/Wall Wear: when you accelerate

Make your symptoms occur several times and shut off engine immediately.
Pull each plug and compare/check for wet black outer shell (same surface as threads).

I think we best assume nothing. Pull the other ones.
Forensics, man, forensics!

If only that plug > localized trauma like a ring installation error or a bad guide.
If two plugs on same side of engine > commonly an overheat over-expansion scoring
If all plugs > global failure like grit in the intake system, a massive overheat, or just an old old incontinent engine.

chachi wrote:pulled the head. broken valve guide, whose pieces went into both cylinders, where the pistons smashed them into the head. the piston tops and head look like ground metal beef. it's almost artistic with the brass bits sticking out of the silver head.

i can see the broken intake guide on #4; it seems possible that the parts could get into #3 as well, but...should they? or did i have a broken guide on #3 too? not that it matters, it all has to be replaced now.
The intense pulsing in the intake and exhaust tracts (almost like stand-off in carb throats) can throw a chunk of metal into every cylinder on inline engines, and definitely both cylinders on the one side of a horizontally opposed engine.
Stupid valve guide .... why did it break? Come loose in the head? People can't read or something, "chill guides and heat heads before installation"!!
