Type 1 engine and Type 4 to 1974 adjusters are 8mm, and too small.
You need the later 10mm screws that use the 14mm locknuts.
Go get 10mmX1.00 bolts at a FLAPS /hardware store.

I'll see what I can locate. I really should pull the head anyways just to verify the engine size. I need to order a gasket set but want to make sure I purchase the correct one. Anyone know the difference between 1700,1800 or 2000 gasket sets or am I being overly anal?

1.8/2.0 share a rebuild kit with their 93/94 head shims. The 1700 kit has the specific-to-it head sealing rings + fuel pump gasket. Most of the rebuild kit items are interchangeable, however.

Thanks Colin. I'll order up a 1700 gasket set and source the gaskets I need seperatley if it turns out to be something else. When it comes in I'll (hopefully) be able to start updating my thread over in the Type 2 forum. Cheers!

That and the HE to muffler gaskets are slightly different as the 1700 have or had smaller holes.

All of the replacements I have seen have defaulted to the skinnier copper gaskets and you know why too.
