If anything, I would imagine that they might extend the warmup cycle by a minute or two - by preventing the thermostat from heating up and expanding as quickly otherwise.

I have experimented with removing parts on the BobD at normal operating rpms
in abnormally high ambient temps:
Hatch open ................ no difference
no fan guard .................. no difference
pushrod tube guards ..... no idea because I have never run a VW without the sled tins
no plug boots ................. serious difference (20*F) because they are downstream of the fan
no foam seal .................. no difference
no underpants ................ no difference
profits ..................... are intact because I have never overheated an engine

For normal people driving their correctly assembled and maintained engines, I do not think "tricks" are necessary.

Go to your local FLAPS and look in the help aisle for broad grommets.
Inquire online for any creative solutions.
Last time, I liked my original wires and connectors and merely scarfed the new boots off the new set, which now awaits its day.

Don't even bother with the aftermarket ones. They disintegrate in the heat. OEM might be pricier, but so is a dropped valve.

Thank you for finding that link about the tie rod boots. I was going nuts trying to find that when you posted your question and I just couldn't remember where the heck I got those from. I used those for years until I finally went back to stock after swapping in new plug wires. Those tie rod boots do actually hold up well to the heat, but they are a huge pain in the butt to get in correctly. You have to work it down into the tin until the little groove seats around the edge of the tin.

If stock was good enough for VW, it's good enough for us.

If the engine is properly built by triple checking everything during build it will come down to...

State of tune.

What helps to stay at peak tune?

1. Regular valve lash check

2. Periodic timing check. (No more than 30 max in a bus preferably 28)

3. Periodic tune up

CHT gauge not needed. Purely aesthetic.

That is quite a rare event. So rare VW never reversed it's course by installing them over the air cooled years.
