Thread repair - Intake Manifold Stud and Spark Plug

Post by BellePlaine » Tue May 17, 2011 11:54 am

Type IV engine.

The main job for Colin and I during this year's Itinerary is to repair a cross-threaded spark plug port at the #1 cylinder and weak threads holding an intake manifold stud. I've read opinions that time-serts are prefered to heli-coils. I wonder if I could get some shopping advice.

http://www.timesert.com/html/sparkplug.html

For the spark plug repair and referencing the timesert website (above), I think that I want to order the M10 X 1.0 standard kit (part no. 4010), yes?
If so, which length insert do I want: 9.0mm, 12.0mm, or 15.0mm?

For the intake manifold stud and referencing the timesert website (below), please advise as to which size I need. Thanks in advance!

Small spark plugs on modern engines are 10mm. We use the older 14mm plugs. Does your Bentley go over thread sizes in the tightening torque table in Engine section?
ColinBoyThatWasn'tVeryHelpful
(IIRC, timesert should be slightly less-to-the-same depth as the plug threads. Too long shrouds the plug end, too short allows carbon build-up to lock the plug in the timesert)

Bentley says that the spark plug thread is an M14 X 1.25 thread. It doesn't mention the length of the threads I'm going to have to measure. New question; the Time-sert standard sparkpug insert is made from copper plated carbon steel. Will that work because they also sell an aluminum insert but they say that the aluminum is for racers using nitromethane. Is that NOS?

Unfortunately, Bentley makes no mention of the intake manifold studs on a type IV engine. In the Fuel Injection section, Bentley says to torque the 13mm nut to 14 ft. lbs but that's as useful as it gets. I'm going to have to measure, I guess. I found these helpful guides to help me (links below).

I measured.

The spark plug thread is M14 X 1.25 X 15mm
Requires Timesert kit #4412 $124.58
Requires Timesert insert #44129 $1.98

The intake manifold stud is M8 X 1.25 X 11.5mm
Requires Timesert kit #1812 (includes 11.7mm inserts) $62.29

Those prices are robbery.

I agree. But Fastenal is selling a wire sparkplug insert made by Recoil for $215 which is a lesser product for more money. I was thinking I would make the kit available to others on loan if anyone else needed it in the future.

Fortunately, I do not know. It turns out that I was using short-threaded spark plugs meant for a T1 instead of the long-threaded plugs meant for a T4. Consequently, I still had strong threads available in the lower half of the port. I was lucky for being wrong.

I was prepared to use a shop-vac to blow air from the tailpipe through the exhaust valve into the cylinder in question with the head on. I had ample amounts of wheel bearing grease at the ready. I'd try it with the head-on, engine-out.

If you go here and plug in your spark plug it will tell you the length it is supposed to be...
