1800 T4 - Clutch Size?

Post by BellePlaine » Fri Apr 08, 2011 11:34 am

My engine number is AW023185. I believe that it is an 1800 made for a 1974 bus. My transmission is the 6-rib kind from a 1976 bus.

Would someone tell me if I have the 228mm style clutch? I'm asking because I'd like purchase the Premium Complete Clutch Kit from the Bus Depot, if it's the correct size for my engine.

When confronted with disparate equipment, no one can tell you what size clutch you have. An 091 transaxle came with a 228mm clutch bell housing. An AW 1800cc engine came with a 215mm clutch. Your bell housing may belong to the 215mm flywheel/clutch, or the engine may have a 228mm flywheel.

You need to measure the diameter of the clutch disk, and verify with the clutch size stamped on the pressure plate. There is one external clue that at least tells you definitively that you have a 228mm clutch fitted to the 2.0 cc engine versus the earlier 215mm fitted to the 1.8 cc engines and the 210mm clutch fitted to the 1.7 engines. The earlier clutches could nestle the pressure plate in a recess in the flwheel. The 228mm clutch is too big. Its pressure plate covers the entire flywheel and is indexed with roll pins.

Thanks. I was afraid that I'd have to measure the disk but I was hoping to hear that a 091 transmission required the 228mm disk. The measurement will have to wait until the next time the engine is out of the bus, I guess.

I'm planning this summer's To-Do List and buying parts. Since I have no idea of the condition of the clutch assembly I thought that it would be prudent to replace the clutch even though it seems to currently work fine. I've only burned out one clutch before so my experience is limited, but when these things go, don't they kind of go quickly?

Depends on how it reached fatal slip. If a bad driver eats up a fresh clutch in 14,000 miles, then yes, the rate of failure will be quick. If a sensible driver first gets slip at 200,000 miles, I would expect another 15,000.

You could probably confirm/rule out the 228mm clutch by the part number of the starter. SR87 is for 228mm, SR15 is for 210/215mm

Alternately, you could order up all three clutch sets ahead of time and return the two you don't use....
