1969 Campmobile--quick engine question

Post by thesamwise4 » Wed Dec 08, 2010 2:34 pm

Is there a way that I can tell in which year my engine was made?

I found two number on the engine: one near the fuel pump: AE 047347

and one over by the intake manifold (113129. 701AC).

Does that 70 mean 1970?

If this isn't it, is there another way that I can figure it out?

Thanks!

AE should be a '71 or '72 dual port.

Like Sped said, your engine is most likely not the original. The whole dual-port-plugged-vacuum-line-for-the-brake-booster (which didn't arrive in buses until '71) kinda implies that.

Here's a list of engine codes for air-cooled VW's.

If you're curious, you can find other fun facts about your bus by decoding the M-Plate. In my '70 it is right behind the driver's seat on the bulkhead. Others will have to chime in on the location of the plate in a '69 Westy.

Happy hunting!

...and when you do find the M-Plate, decode it here:

Hiya Sam,

Your engine, if original to your 69, should have serial number that starts with a "B" followed by a "5".

Instead you are showing an "AE" series engine. This series was produced by VW from 1971 to midway through the 1973 production year when it gave way to the "AK" series. Your serial number indicates that your engine was probably produced in September or October of 1970.

A major difference between the two cases is that the B5 series came with 8mm oil passages whereas the AE series came with 10mm oil passages. That tends to make the AE a bit more attractive to a rebuilder.
I have cancer.

It does not have me.
