Cleaning case and fasteners?

Post by BlissfullyCrusin » Fri Dec 01, 2006 2:50 pm

So I got my case split and I'm awaiting parts to reassemble it. I'm wondering whats the best way to clean it up, along with all the through-bolts and other fasteners? I haven't found a machine shop around here I'd trust with my engine.
I've seen the parts cleaner tubs, but I don't have a garage. I do have a backyard though. Is it better to just get some simple green (I think that what its called) and use some elbow grease?

I'm sure this is a topic of much debate so throw what you got at me. I'm in no real rush, I'd rather have it all cleaned well, rather then cleaned fast.

The purple cleaners the "good stuff". Make sure you wear gloves.

Dishwashing soap. I used oxy action steel wool pads. Check out the grocery store dishwashing section for brushes and sponges that you'll need to get into all the nooks and crannies. There's no magic bullet, just whatever works for you and a lot of hard work.

I cleaned mine real good and then took it to a machine shop, they should know how to clean aluminum, they told me it's basically a big vat of carb cleaner.
