Engine Install

Post by sped372 » Sat May 15, 2010 6:24 am

My longblock is due to show up Monday and I'd like to prep a few things. I have a new throwout bearing and I've cleaned up the transaxle bellhousing. I'm assuming a light coating of grease on the input shaft and at the t/o bearing pivot points on the fork? I have white lithium, black moly-type, and wheel bearing greases at my disposal. Which would be preferred, if any?

Moly. A light smear on the release bearing face as well. And hit the starter shaft going into the bell housing bushing with a little dab.

Just completed. Hope all goes smoothly in the coming days. Gotta git back out there into the world and do some camping.

Where did you get it from? What all did you get?
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue, I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace. Where never lark, or even eagle flew. And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod, The high untrespassed sanctity of space, Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

I went through Art at Air Cooled Engineering in Salt Lake City. Just a plain-jane 1600 single port as I already have a good carb, manifold, tin, etc. for that setup and I'm not in any hurry puttering down the road.

New case, balanced German internals, and good German heads. New pressure plate, clutch, and release bearing. There's other odds n' ends as well but that's the most of it.

Preparing for battle, all tin degreased and ready to go:

That's a classic photograph right there. Get your SO to photograph you at engine start-up.

Sweet! I hope to be doing the same thing by the end of the the month. I wish my rear bumper area came completely off like that. My live would be so much easier.

The removable apron is pretty convenient.

Yep, it's very nice. Just another example of the obvious superiority of the early Bay. :geek:

Well, frack. Foiled by a busted preheat pipe stud. Had to undo everything I did yesterday. Got the busted stud removed but decided it was time to stop as my mood had turned sour. I'll pick it back up tomorrow after work again.

Fresh studs will pick it right back up again. I was delirious with joy when I ended up with new exhaust studs one painful repair at a time, and lathered them with anti-seize so that all subsequent exhaust work henceforth was easy and gracious.

Correctamundo. Chased the threads out and installed new studs and my mood was indeed positive again. It was somewhat short lived, though. After finagling the thermostat rod into place (man that sucks!) I find that my shroud won't drop the last 1/4" into place. What the...? Back off with the shroud.

It appears that the upper stud holding the oil cooler is much longer than the last block's was. It hits inside the fan shroud. I'm debating whether to replace or "modify" the stud OR just drill a hole in the shroud at the shown location. Drilling seems easier but I wonder about the effects on the fluid dynamics of my cooling air.

Not a showstopper, just a minor setback. All in due time.
