Thanks for the detailed post Lyle.

As you pointed out, my fantasy of keeping the engine in it's state of good running homeostasis, has collided with the reality of the stupidity of sticking my head in the sand as far as understanding the current state of the rest of the engine. Colin will be here in two weeks, and want a set of seasoned, expert eyes to help me with the forensics of current engine state.

I did order a net set of P's and C's. Original plan was to have him help me reassemble the top end correctly, but has now morphed into correct diagnosis of current engine state.
