Engine Specs

Post by retro1302 » Wed Oct 03, 2012 6:14 am

Does anyone know a reference where I can check engine specifications against engine number? I have a '65 Camper and the "Birth Certificate" I just received, auf Deutchland, indicates that it is the original engine. The engine number is 0834****. I don't know the full number, offhand, but those are the first few digits.

John Muir has a pretty good write-up in How To Keep Your VW Alive.
Tom Wilson has a more general write up.

Your engine number id lacking a prefix number which kind of kills the search here. If you find a letter , the "0" makes sense. Otherwise, you should be way up in the "8"s as your first number.
If my memory serves me, you have a 1500 engine 51 hp 83 mm bore 69 mm stroke, and 7.8:1 compression ratio with a 28 Pict 1 carb? and vacuum only distributor.

The full number is 0834535. According to Muir's table that matches, closely, to Dec., 1964 which makes sense. My bus was manufactured in January 1965. Ergo, per the table it is a 1500. It has a 28 Pict 1 carb. The PO installed a 009 distributor. I'll take the 51 hp on a good day. Thanks
