Sure now I'm like, duh! Woulda had to feeler gauge around the edges to center the pressure plate while tightening the bolts. If I had thought to pay that much attention, which obviously, I didn't.

It made perfect sense. A low level vibration that became more pronounced the higher the rpm, nothing violent, just a consistent vibration that shouldn't be there. I guess some would argue that it was some sloppy work to miss a tolerance issue like that on the part of the shop. But I'm not holding a beef after the priority service follow up work that was brought to bear on my concerns over a job they had done some nine, ten, uhm, years ago.

kudos to the shop. word of mouth is the best ad you can have. everybody on here or searching the net will have this in their search results. maybe go over on the samba and post this on their feedback thread. don't short shrift yourself either, you were able to track it down to the offending assembly, even though you didn't know the cause.

Thanks vdubyah73, and I have to give credit to everyone I talked to and that weighed in here, also. Thank you all. Engine is back in, some minor wrap up tasks for tomorrow, and we'll give it a spin hoping for perfection joy. Fingers crossed.

Good job, Neal. Your following through helps us all, and it helps Dan Hall INC know that we are alert and that we care.

Nice work Neal.

So what did you decide to do about the clutch disk? Did you ever find out what that chunk of rubber was doing in there, or where it came from?

I'm suspecting the rubber was from manufacture. Perhaps that spring was a bit loose. Everyone scratches their heads over it, including vendors. Bought a new clutch disc of similar design, no rubber. Saving that one to try in the engine that will eventually go into Betty Baja, as pulling the engine frequently is easier.

Now that is more like it. Took her out for a bit of a spin through the winding roads down the mountain and on a bit of stretch. She'll do 75 real nice. Sweet. Further.

As am I, can breathe again.

And thanks, great photo, but we're not going there in terms of motif when we get Gretchen Ghia repainted at some point. After body is lifted and rust addressed. Leaning uber dark green.

Then interior has to be a good British tan/biscuit balanced tan brown.
That would be thimply FABulous.

Dang it, you are right. And currently it isn't. Black interior.

One step at a time.
