The distributor is already out...I didn't want it sitting in there if it wasn't seating properly.

I figured a single stripe/mark would be 1 & 3 (1 for 1?) and two stripes/marks for 2 & 4 (2 for 2?). But right now I'm feeling a serious brain drain. :shaking2: There is a cut notch on the edge of the pulley behind that painted single mark you see in the picture. And thank you on the plastic scale question. I'm discovering that I'm definitely a visual learner.

I'm going back to Shepki's and grab the Wilson and Bentley books.

My pulley painting convention is so logical as to be unforgettable ..... :cyclopsani:

Single paint mark is always in line with the timing notch for TDC #1 and #3
See, a single mark IS divisible by both one and three.
The double paint mark is 180* away where both #2 and #4 are at TDC
See, a double mark is divisible by both two and four.
Fool-proof, isn't it?

Please note, misszora, that the timing mark on the pulley will NOT be perfectly vertical when the engine is at TDC for #1.
It will be off to the left where the timing scale "0" is, once you have the right hole of the scale at vertical (that is where it bolts to the fan housing when the fan housing is in place.

Is the longitudinal line of the crankcase the same as the crankcase parting seam?
Yes. And the 12* angle will be the drive gear slot aiming off towards the left side of the engine sort of towards cylinder #3 on the engine itself.

Want an even more fool-proof method...paint the TDC mark Insignia Yellow and then paint a mark 180* from that International Orange. User can choose his/her favorite color. If your color blind stick with a brail double mark 180* from the TDC mark.
